Poetry Club Post #2

Title: Friends
Authors: Lydia and Sydney

Friends are special -- they supply you with care,
And something called love is what you share.
Friends share secrets,
And love revolves around you.
Friendship isn't just giggling and laughing,
It's about spending time with them too.
Friendships last forever,
and friends are very caring too.
They love to spend time with you
and everything you do.
And that's why I love my friends..
Because they bring happiness to you.

The best thing about my break...

Welcome back! I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving break! This morning, I'd like you to tell me about the best thing about your break. It doesn't have to be something spectacular...just share something you enjoyed during the holiday.

The best thing about my break was taking my nephew, Aiden, to Blue Ridge, Georgia, to ride the Christmas train. He loves trains, and we took him on an hour train ride through the mountains to see Santa. It was freezing outside, but Aiden wanted to sit on the outdoor train car anyways! I think my teeth chattered the entire time! :)

What was the best thing about your break?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey guys!

You've all just left for Thanksgiving holidays, and I am here at school cleaning up all of your many messes! :) I wanted to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy FIVE whole days off from school, and enjoy your time with your friends and families! At the top of my "thankful list" is each and every one of you...even when you are making me crazy! :) You are all such an important part of my life, and I love you very much! Enjoy your break!

Love,
Miss Cox

Poetry Club

Jayden and Lilly had a fantastic idea for sharing their poetry since we don't ever seem to have enough time during the school day for sharing our personal writing pieces. Since you all just left for the afternoon--and for Thanksgiving holidays--I told the girls I would post their first piece for them:

There is something about this day that makes me want to say
I am thankful for my toys and for my friends who are boys.
I am thankful for my friends who are nice to me,
and I am thankful for what has come to be.
I am thankful for many things that the many days have to bring.
Everyone should be thankful for everything they own,
even if it is less than one ice cream cone.
Everyone should be thankful when we get the things we want,
because some kids just don't.

A Letter From Mrs. Watts

Dear Students,

Thank you so much for making this a great experience for me. I was nervous about being a student teacher in the 5th grade, but you guys made it fun. Today is a bitter-sweet day for me. I am excited to be finishing school so I can become a teacher, but I will miss all of you very much. Each of you are special to me and I love you all. Have a great year and be sweet for Ms. Cox and Mr. Tigue. You guys put the "fabulous" in fifth grade!

Love,
Mrs. Watts

Tuck Everlasting

This week, we are beginning a unit on Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. At the beginning of the story, we meet Winnie. Winnie is an eleven year old girl who is faced with the choice of drinking from a spring that would allow her to live forever.

If you had the chance to stay young forever, would you take it? Why or why not?

If you did choose to drink from the spring, what age would you choose to do it? Why?

We are currently reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen in our reading class. I know that you are really enjoying this book, just as I promised you would! One of our comprehension skills is identifying conflicts and resolutions in the plot of a story. What are some of Brian's conflicts since the plane crash? If you were Brian, what steps would you take to resolve those conflicts?

Welcome to Our Blog!

Hello fabulous fifth graders! :)

Welcome to our class blog! We will use this blog throughout the entire school year to communicate with each other. You may use our blog on your laptop at school, or you can even respond from home. I love to use the blog with students, because it helps me learn more about you. Think about other ways that blogging could help us learn more from each other. How do you think blogging might help us as fifth graders?

Our field trip to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center is rapidly approaching! We are going to have such a wonderful time extending our learning about space. Right now, I'm preparing our space unit. What questions do you have about space? What are you interested in learning more about?

Cells

For the past two weeks, we have been learning all about plant and animals cells. Yesterday, we created edible cells to help us identify all of the organelles and structures within each type of cell. You also completed your "Junk Cell" projects for homework this week. Share one thing you have learned about cells with your classmates.

Here are some pictures from yesterday's activity:
